Words from Wesley

“I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case unless they hold fast to the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out.”

John Wesley

Wesley was not concerned that the people called Methodist cease to exist. His concern was that they would continue without the same passion for life and ministry that they had when they first began. In his time Methodist were know for their call to personal holiness and social justice. As his modern day descendants we need to examine how we are doing in our personal walk and our corporate life. This examination should lead us to make any necessary changes that will allow us to fully become what Wesley envisioned – a people who were passionate for God and for the World.

I know several same-sex couples, some from our own congregation, who are very passionate for God and the World. They work very hard for their cause AND their church, and they love their fellow congregant, and for that matter all of their sisters and brothers in Christ, openly. So why won’t the Methodist Church return that love?
